The Ceremony - Beauty & Drama

Hosted by the always-hilarious Conan O'Brien, the show opened with dazzling performances by Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, paying tribute to The Wizard of Oz. Though neither took home an award, they won over audiences online. Another standout moment came from Doja Cat, Lisa, and RAYE, who delivered a stunning tribute to the James Bond franchise. However, many questioned why the ceremony overlooked honoring legendary filmmaker David Lynch, who passed away this year.
Controversy arose with the presence of Emilia Pérez lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón, who faced backlash over past racist and offensive tweets. Fellow cast member Selena Gomez shared a warm moment with her on camera, seemingly showing support despite the racist and Islamophobic controversy. Meanwhile, Zoe Saldaña addressed the backlash surrounding Emilia Pérez in Mexico, stating, “I am very sorry that so many Mexicans felt offended… I don’t share your opinion. To me, the heart of this film was not Mexico.” An unusual statement, considering the nature of the movie. This only fueled further the ongoing debate, turning Gascón and Saldaña into two of the most criticized nominees and making Emilia Pérez more of a meme than a celebrated work of art. One thing is for sure, Emilia Pérez isn't a winner in the eyes of the general audience.

The biggest surprise of the night was Anora, which swept multiple awards. Mikey Madison’s win over Demi Moore for Best Actress even led some to draw comparisons to the plot of The Substance.
