The newly released visual dropped on May 24, which is celebrated as Scuba Diving Day in Japan. The date was chosen because of a clever play on numbers5 (Go), 2 (To), 4 (Sea) - which sounds like “Go to Sea.” Additionally, this date commemorates the day Robert Sinclair Dietz introduced diving gear to Japan in 1953, making it the perfect occasion to release a new visual for a diving-themed anime.

What Is Grand Blue About?

Grand Blue follows Iori Kitahara, a college freshman who moves to the seaside town of Izu to start his university life. Expecting romance and peaceful campus days, Iori is instead thrown into the wild world of a rowdy diving club—famous not only for their love of the ocean but also their chaotic, alcohol-fueled parties and frequent nudity.

The show delivers a hilarious mix of college life, friendship, diving, and absurd comedy.

Grand Blue comes from the hilarious manga created by Kenji Inoue and drawn by Kimitake Yoshioka. The series kicked off in April 2014 and is still going strong today, published in Kodansha’s good! Afternoon magazine. The anime adaptation first hit screens in 2018, animated by Studio Zero-G, and it brought the early chapters of the manga to life.

Final Thoughts

For many fans, the announcement felt too good to be true. With Season 1 airing way back in 2018, many had lost hope of ever seeing a continuation. Personally, at some point, I even considered starting the manga, thinking a second season would never come.

Now, with an official release date, a new visual, and a confirmed cast and crew, the dream is finally real: Grand Blue Dreaming is coming back - and it’s bringing the beach party with it.
