The time has finally come, and Evelyn has at last been released to Zenless Zone Zero. Her striking design aside, Evelyn appears to be an interesting character who can unleash a ton of damage in a short window, making her a decent pick for any of you who prefer burst units. Today I’ll share with you my thoughts on Evelyn and whether she’s worth the hefty investment of Polychromes.

Is Evelyn Strong?

Starting off, we’ll look at Evelyn’s strength and how well she fares against current end-game modes. Evelyn is an interesting unit that brings a whole new playstyle to the game. With most DPS characters, you either want to quickly build up their EX Special or Ultimate and unleash that while doing your Basic Attacks to do damage. Evelyn, on the other hand, greatly relies on Chain Attacks to do most of her damage. She has a unique type of Chain Attack that has a tremendous multiplier, allowing you to unleash a ton of damage in a single stun window. If you play your cards right, you can get up to 4 Chain Attacks in a single burst window, and that’s a ton of damage. However, those powerful Chain Attacks require a specific resource that you first have to build up, and outside of stun windows, Evelyn can feel a bit on the weaker end, as opposed to other characters who have a constant uptime for damage. While this may sound great to some, to others it may also be a dealbreaker. So while Evelyn can deal a lot of damage, most of it occurs during stun windows, and she is generally a unit that revolves around a bursty playstyle, rather than a constant output of damage.

Should You Pull?

When it comes to DPS units, I generally advise people against pulling for them, unless the unit is meta-defining, similar to how Miyabi was. In Evelyn’s case, while she is strong and offers a new playstyle, I do not believe that she is meta-defining. Yes, she is cool, her animations are great, and her design is amazing. We finally have the Kafka of ZZZ, so there’s no doubt that a lot of players will pull for that alone. However, at the end of the day, she is still a DPS unit that will undoubtedly become obsolete in a few patches. DPS units tend to be very bad investments in gacha games, and ZZZ is no exception. You will likely still be able to clear any type of content with Evelyn for the foreseeable future, but she is definitely not on the level of Miyabi or Astra Yao in terms of investment priorities. So for her, I’ll say, pull if you like the design, the playstyle, and the character. Skip if you already have decently built teams. I personally will be skipping Evelyn as I don’t enjoy burst units, and I’ll be keeping my eyes open for any upcoming units.
