After being adapted from the already famous video game franchise, The Last of Us became an even bigger cultural phenomenon during the past year after HBO released the TV series under the same name, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as the iconic character duo Joel and Ellie.
The HBO show has been renewed for multiple seasons ahead, so there’s plenty to get excited about. We will get to explore a lot more of the dystopian world of the infected. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have much more untapped source material from the Naughty Dog video game series.

Will The Last of Us Season 2 be Based on the Second Game?
One of the main reasons why the first season was so highly praised was because of the faithful devotion to the original game’s storyline. At the same time, the script took its time to build on top of that storyline and give us additional character B-plots that flesh out the universe of The Last of Us. Fans are left wondering whether season 2 will continue on that same path.
It’s safe to assume that season 2 will draw its inspiration from the even more expansive game sequel, The Last of Us: Part II.
When they were asked about their plans, Mazin and Druckmann confirmed that the exploration of the second game will take more than one season. They didn’t say how many, but it’s definitely going to be multiple.

What to Expect in The Last of Us Season 2
Over the course of January 2024, there have been many announcements about the growing cast and characters that we should expect in season 2.
There will be a time jump in the events of the sequel, following Ellie as a 19-year-old. She was 14 years old when the events of the first season unfolded. However, Bella Ramsey will reprise their role in the show, and there won’t be any new recastings for an older version of Ellie.
Major new characters will make their appearances for the first time, and HBO has announced 3 actors who have officially been cast in these roles.
Abby, a new protagonist that appears in The Last of Us: Part II, will be played by Kaitlyn Dever, a young actress rising to popularity in recent years, best known for being in the movies Booksmart, No One Will Save You, and Ticket to Paradise.
Dina, Ellie’s new love interest and companion in the second game, will be played by Isabela Merced, famous for her roles in Transformers: The Last Knight, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, and the upcoming Marvel movie Madame Web.
Jesse, Dina’s ex-boyfriend and a community leader in the game, will be played by Young Mazino. The actor had his breakout performance in the Netflix miniseries Beef, which was one of the most popular and awarded new shows of 2023, winning multiple Emmys and Golden Globes for its excellence.
