During the Version 1.4 livestream, the developers behind Zenless Zone Zero announced that the game would be receiving two new permanent gameplay modes in the new version. One of these mods will be an extension to the already existing Hollow Zero roguelike mode, while the other will be an entirely new mode similar in essence to the Shiyu Defense. Discover more details about both modes below.

Hollow Zero: Shadows Lost
Hollow Zero: Shadows Lost is an expansion to the Hollow Zero mode in the game. It is once again going to present a roguelike minigame for players to go through. However, in this mode, rather than simply getting boosts for various elements or simple stat boosts, you will get unique upgrades that will completely change the way you play your characters. Some of these unique upgrades will even change the way some of your characters’ skills look, making them even cooler and giving a whole new breath of fresh air to the character and their gameplay.
The mode will have you going through rooms upon rooms, similar to how the Simulated Universe works in Honkai: Star Rail. These rooms will be different in kind, with some offering a place for rest, while others having you fight against waves of enemies. If you’re a fan of roguelike games and are looking for something to spice up your Hollow Zero runs, then the Shadow Lost expansion will certainly be a mode you’ll want to sink your time into.
In addition, Hollow Zero: Shadows Lost will feature its own leveling system that will work similarly to how the Hollow Zero levels work. You will once again get a ton of rewards for leveling up and can also expect to get copies of the upcoming Brawlerboo. Naturally, you will not be able to get all rewards at once, as the progression will be weekly capped, similar to how it is in Hollow Zero, but it is still a new way to get more Polychromes in.

Deadly Assault
The second new gameplay mode that will be added to ZZZ in Version 1.4 is Deadly Assault. This is a mode that resets on a biweekly basis and has you fighting against a series of 3 powerful bosses to earn stars and claim rewards such as Polychromes. This will be an endgame mode similar to the Shiyu Defense that will reset twice a month on Friday. It will be working on a similar schedule as Shiyu Defense, meaning that one week you will get a reset of Deadly Assault, and the other of Shiyu Defense. Although the mode offers 3 bosses that rotate on a bi-weekly basis, you only need to clear two of them with full starts to get all rewards, so if you have strong enough teams, you should be able to complete it easily. In addition, in this mode, you can only use a character against one boss. After this, that character will become locked, and you will not be able to use them against the remaining bosses. This implies that we will need to have 3 sets of fully built teams to tackle this new content, so better get to farming!
With the addition of this mode, players will have almost no downtime for endgame content, but it also means that you will have that much more Polychromes to farm for your favorite characters.
